Packaging plays a minor role in carbon footprints. The decisive factors are agricultural production, and in the case of animal products husbandry and feeding, as well as fertilisation and the use of pesticides. This means that the packaging has very little impact on the carbon footprint of a product and therefore will not have much influence on the star rating awarded. As a result, a product with plastic packaging may be awarded the same number of stars as a product with cardboard packaging.
