For Migros, it is of the utmost importance that the M-Check for environmentally friendly packaging is scientifically substantiated. For this reason, we worked together very closely with experts from Migros Industrie and external scientific partners during the development of the new method. For example, the environmental and sustainability consulting company Carbotech AG ensured that the rating system meets scientific requirements. In addition, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) performed quality assurance on the system.
The life cycle assessment experience that Carbotech AG has accumulated over a period of more than 30 years has shown that the environmental performance of packaging is dependent on four factors – materials, weight, the amount of recycled materials used in the packaging and how the packaging is recycled after use.
These four factors from the foundation of the M-Check for environmentally friendly packaging rating system. As the weight of the packaging has the biggest influence here, this factor has a higher weighting (62.5%) than the other three factors (each with a weighting of 12.5%).
